Ram Dass/Alan Watts Week 4: Day 27} Loving the World

This week, Alan says, “Here we are, the richest country on earth, fantastic in wealth, our poorest people are princes compared with the people who live in the slums of Calcutta. And yet, we cannot help the rest of the world effectively because we don’t enjoy what we have ourselves. You see, this whole attitude to the material world that we have, our refusal to enjoy it, shows forth our intense hostility to the physical environment because what have you but hostility to show when you’ve never allowed yourself to love because loving might be naughty, might be dangerous.”

On the whole, do you enjoy what you have? What keeps you from enjoying it? How might you enjoy it more? And how might you turn the enjoyment of pleasure into an art? Would that help us help the rest of the world more effectively?
